College Hockey Game of the Week: No. 10 Cornell at No. 7 Quinnipiac
Let’s do things a bit differently this week as we only have a one-game series to take care of. This time, an Ivy League school enters the fray against the defending champions.
The buses are revving up for a trip to Connecticut where the No. 10 4-1-1 Cornell Big Red are getting ready to take on the No. 7 7-3-1 Quinnipiac Bobcats.
Another top-10 matchup will display a lot of talent on all areas of the ice. Let’s take a look at what each team brings to the table.
Colin Graf found his way into quite a few Hobey Baker Watch articles last year, and he’s picking up right where he left off. He’s only played six games this season, but he has double the points with 12.
Leading the team in points is junior Jacob Quillan with 15 points on the season. Sam Lipkin has been solid, leading the program with six goals.
Graduate defenseman Jayden Lee has been one of the most noticeable blue-liners on the Bobcats this year. In 11 games Lee has tallied nine points, placing him with the best of the position.
Goaltender Yaniv Perets had an incredible campaign with Quinnipiac last season and was one of the many main reasons why the program was so successful. Now, that big responsibility is placed on Vinny Duplessis, who came over from Boston University.
In an eight-game sample size, he’s done very well, accumulating a 1.59 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.
The strength of this team has been its penalty kill. It ranks second best in the NCAA with a 94.9 percent success rate.
Ivy League schools like Cornell usually start the season a bit later than most programs, but that has not stopped some of its players from tearing up the scoresheet.
These schools aren’t just for the smart, they’re for the quick-witted warriors on ice too.
Gabriel Seger leads the way with eight points and five goals. As a senior, his veteran presence is important for a long season.
Standout freshman Ben Robertson has taken off early in his career. As a defenseman, he’s over a point per game with seven assists in six games.
Players like Kyle Penney, Dalton Bancroft and Ryan Walsh have been showing off the strong depth pieces with five points each.
This is another program that has had strong goaltending this season with junior Ian Shane being a trustworthy last line of defense. Throughout six games, Shane has impressed with a 1.32 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.
This game will give hockey fans some can’t-miss action to start their weekend. The contest is set to take place on Friday, Nov. 17.
