Runningback with the stiff arm

College football betting: Week 3

By Antonio Fondacaro

With two weeks in the books, the sky is already falling in the college football world.

Texas dispatched the 2023 national champion Michigan Wolverines 31-12, (told ya!) The fighting Irish lost to NIU; A 28-point underdog.

Last week we went 2-1 (lost the Penn State Spread) and are looking for more loopholes to bet.

The following article contains information that is not representative of the opinions of CommRadio. It solely expresses the opinions of Antonio Fondacaro.

Oregon vs. Oregon State (+16.5)

Here we go! The second “get right” game in a row for the Ducks is an away rivalry game against their toughest opponent yet.

The thought process here is very similar to the Michigan game last year, but this time I like the underdog.

Oregon is overrated, the only reason this game has such a big point margin is because the AP is waiting for the Ducks to play to “expectation.”

News Flash! We live in reality and the expectation has changed. With two games in the books, we know what Oregon can do: Throw the football and play spotty defense.

This Ducks team can barely run on FCS opponents; Idaho was able to pressure and Nullify the Ducks all night, despite an incredible performance from Dillon Gabriel.

You can argue in their Week 2 matchup against Boise State that Oregon was facing the best rusher in college football, but it’s obvious that Boise State’s supporting cast is subpar.

The Oregon State Beavers have had a much sharper game plan defensively against similar opponents; pack that with a balanced Offense, and all of a sudden blowing this team out by 17 points becomes a tall task for the Ducks.

Take the points, if there weren't a number nine strapped next to the Oregon logo this spread would be much larger.

Alabama (-15.5) vs. Wisconsin

I am not in the sector of belief that this game will be a test for Alabama.

Although it was close for three and a half quarters, Alabama still blew the doors off of a gritty Southern Florida team.

Last weekend’s game for Alabama was a classic scenario of a powerhouse overlooking a weak opponent, after three quarters the Crimson Tide washed over the Bulls in the fourth, scoring a whopping 28 points to end the game.

Alabama is still loaded, and with the sketchy showing against USF, this spread is value heaven. We may never see an Alabama spread this low again against an unranked opponent on the season.

Wisconsin plays tough football, which from Bama’s performance last week could be seen as a concern. I'm betting on the raw talent of Alabama's line of scrimmage, receiver play, and defensive backs to dominate Wisconsin as they should.

Sometimes in betting, you need to follow the simple rules of business: buy low, sell high. In this case, we are buying low and cashing high.

Take the spread and Roll Tide!

Ole Miss (-23.5) vs. Wake Forest

I've been contemplating between this pick and Texas's -34.5 against UTSA all week.

I really like the Longhorns, but I like Ole Miss just as much. Their line of scrimmage play on both sides may be slightly weaker than Texas, but the offensive talent on this Rebels Team is incredible.

So, I went with the lower point total to cover, lame but you gotta win.

Wake Forest isn’t necessarily a bad team… Just kidding they are. Ole Miss, although not quite at the level of Texas, has superior offensive and defensive lines than Wake Forest; a team that struggled in the trenches against Virginia of all teams.

Wake Forest has a balanced offense that performed well in both weeks despite the narrow loss to the Cavaliers.

On the defensive side, however, the Demon Deacons are very susceptible to the passing game, which I firmly believe Ole Miss has the best passing game in the country.

The Rebels have outscored their opponents 128-3 so far in just two weeks of play. Receivers, Tre Harris, Cayden Lee, Antwane Wells Jr., and Caden Preskorn all have over 100 receiving yards.

Heisman candidate Jaxon Dart will have a field day toying with Wake Forest's defense; I wouldn’t be surprised if Ole Miss covers by half.
