Champions League update: April 11
Day 1 saw two draws. Day 2 saw two games decided by one goal. Each game had a late goal that could prove crucial in deciding who advances.
All eight teams are still alive though as the first leg games of the Champions League quarterfinal set the stage for games to follow next week.
Manchester City vs. Real Madrid
Both teams got off to a hot start offensively as there were three goals in the first 15 minutes.
Bernardo Silva started the scoring in just the second minute for Manchester City, but Real Madrid responded quickly with two goals in less than two minutes.
Ruben Dias was credited an own goal after a shot deflected off his right leg into the back of the net. Rodrygo Goes followed for Real Madrid to give them a 2-1 lead.
Manchester City responded in the second half with goals from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol in the 66th and 71st minutes, respectively as both buried shots in the corner of the net from outside the box.
Real Madrid equalized though on a goal from Federico Valverde to bring the score back even before the second leg next week.
Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich
Both teams got off to a good start offensively in this game as well with a goal by each team in the first 20 minutes. Bukayo Saka got the first goal for Arsenal in the 12th minute before Serge Gnabry responded in the 18th minute.
A Harry Kane penalty gave Bayern Munich a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
Arsenal responded in the second half when Leandro Trossard took a pass from Gabriel Jesus and put it in the back of the net to tie the game.
The match was not without controversy after a missed handball call on Gabriel (not Gabriel Jesus) from Arsenal. Gabriel picked up the ball after a pass on a goal kick and rolled it back to the goalkeeper David Raya who passed it again, and play continued.
Had it been called, Bayern Munich would have been given a penalty, but as it is, the teams are even going into the second leg.
PSG vs. Barcelona
Barcelona came out strong in the first half which was highlighted by a 37th minute goal from Raphinha.
PSG looked as if they were going to turn the tides early in the second half with two quick goals. Ousmane Dembélé tied the game before Vitinha scored quickly after to give PSG the lead.
Raphinha scored his second goal of the game to level the score again in the 62nd minute. Andreas Christensen would later give Barcelona the lead off a corner kick. That lead would hold, and Barcelona won the first leg 3-2.
Atlético Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund
Atlético Madrid rode to victory off a dominant first half. Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino scored to give Atlético Madrid a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Borussia Dortmund got a critical late goal from Sébastien Haller to make the game 2-1. They would ultimately lose the game, but Haller’s goal will give them a much better chance to advance after the second leg match.
