Best sports venues for fans to storm (besides football and basketball)
Field storms in college football and court storms in college basketball have been a staple following a big win since the dawn of time.
But what about other sports? What if we saw a lacrosse field storm or maybe a wrestling mat storm?
Which alternate sports venues would be the best for fans to storm? Find out in my analysis below.
Number three: Baseball field
Why leave all the postgame fun to the players and coaches after a walk-off win?
Whether it be a grand slam or a hit by pitch with bases loaded, it would be fun to see how fans would react after a surprising victory.
As the bases are loaded with two outs, fans crowd the first and third base fences and prepare to hop over and celebrate with the players and coaches.
Baseball does not see many field storms, which is why it would be interesting to see how it plays out.
There is normally a large fine for any individual trespassing a baseball field, but that number would grow exponentially for each field stormer.
Number two: Wrestling mat
Upsets may be few and far between in wrestling, but they still happen and they deserve to be celebrated.
The practice of ‘storming the mat’ sounds great in theory, as fans crowd the ladders before running down to celebrate with the underdogs.
Before the final match, the opposing team would be advised to stay away from the main area of the mats.
As the clock ticks, fans make their way down the bleachers to the edge of the stairs to anticipate the storming.
I would imagine wrestling officials to be a bit more strict, delivering a rough penalty to the offenders and ‘mat stormers’.
Honorable mention: Natatorium
Picture this: The top team in the nation loses thanks to one final race where an underdog takes first place.
A swarm of fans take to the pool and jump in to celebrate with the underdogs winning at their home natatorium.
Just like in football and basketball, the opponents rush to leave the pool as fans swim around for a few minutes before getting asked to leave.
I’m not sure what the fine would be, but it would certainly be the first time a ‘pool storm’ has been attempted.
Number one: Soccer field
From the Premier League title race to high school rivalry games, there’s nothing better than a pitch storm after a big win.
After football and basketball, rushing the soccer field after a big win would help bring in more fans after the fact to show how raucous the atmosphere can get.
In the United States, field storms in soccer do not happen as often, but it would be interesting to see how it would play out.
There would be plenty of room on the field for all of the fans to enter and for the opposing team to exit.
The punishment of storming the soccer field may be hefty, but it would certainly be worth it in the eyes of the school whose team got the big win.
