Around the UCL: Matchday 3
PSG Shutout Milan
The match of the week in the Champions League turned into a snoozefest as PSG beat AC Milan 3-0.
In the 32nd minute, super striker Killian Mbappe created a yard of space and fired a shot past Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan to give PSG the 1-0 lead.
Dembele looked to have doubled PSG’s lead early in the second half, but VAR overturned his goal. Five minutes later, a Dembele shot ricocheted to the feet of Kolo Muani who tapped the ball in.
PSG added a third late in the game, as Milan’s chances in this group dropped lower and lower.
Dortmund Outlast Newcastle
Dortmund won their first Champions League game this year on Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 cage match against Newcastle. The first half saw both teams trading blows with Newcastle hitting both the crossbar and post on separate occasions.
In the 45th minute, Felix Nmecha scored his first goal for Dortmund, placing a Schlotterbeck cutback into the far corner past Nick Pope.
Nmecha’s goal would prove to be the only goal in the match; with this win, Dortmund jumps both Milan and Newcastle into second place in Group F.
Celtic and Atletico Fail to Find a Winner
The Spanish giants traveled to Scotland to face a Celtic side yet to gain a point in this year’s Champions League.
Celtic started this game fabulously, just four minutes in, a wonderful one-two between Kyogo Furuhashi and Matthew O’Riley led to the Japanese forward scoring his second goal of the Champions League season.
Atlético would find the equalizer through a penalty with Antoine Greizmann missing the initial kick but scoring on the rebound.
Three minutes later, Celtic would retake the lead through another beautiful passing pattern. Furuhashi’s Japan teammate Daizen Maeda received a pass behind the Atlético Madrid back line and crossed the ball to Luis Palma. Palma’s shot beat Jan Oblak at the far post.
Early in the second half, Atlético equalized once again. Marcos Llorente found Álvaro Morata at the back post, and Morata’s diving header beat Joe Hart as Celtic and Atlético split a point each.
Man United vs Copenhagen Saved by the Most Unlikeliest of Heroes
There is no sugarcoating this, Harry Maguire has not been a favorite of United fans. From losing his captaincy and being dropped from the starting 11 to having a nearly seven-minute-long fail compilation video with 2.6 million views, the center-back’s career for United has been rocky.
However, the defender once signed for a record £80 million, may have saved United’s season. In the 72nd minute, United recycled a corner kick to the feet of Christian Eriksen, who crossed it towards the back post. Maguire’s thumping header beat Kamil Grabara giving the Red Devils the late lead.
In the 95th minute, Copenhagen were gifted with a lifeline. Scott Mctominay fouled Mohamed Elyounoussi in the box giving Copenhagen the chance to equalize from the spot.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana has had a terrible start to his Manchester United career. His 96th-minute save made up for all his previous errors. On the last kick of the game, substitute Jordan Larsson had his penalty saved by Onana at full stretch giving Manchester United their first Champions League win this season.
