Around the SEC: Week 5
The SEC featured the most excitement and chaos of the season thus far in this week’s matchups.
Week 5 featured the first full week of inter-conference matchups throughout the entire SEC.
No. 22 Florida vs. Kentucky started the day off for the conference. Florida entered the game as the No. 22 ranked team in the country. However, Kentucky took them down 33-14.
The Wildcats relied on the run game as running back Ray Davis ran 26 times for 280 yards and three touchdowns. The Gators had no answer for him and Kentucky exploited that as Davis led them to victory.
Kentucky looks to carry this momentum into their biggest test of the season as they play No. 1 Georgia.
Texas A&M defeated Arkansas 34-22 at a neutral site at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Texas A&M played its first full game without starting quarterback Connor Weigman. Wiegman is likely out for the year with a foot injury.
New starter, Max Johnson, a transfer from LSU, went 20-of-31 for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite putting up 22 points, the Razorbacks offense could never get going. quarterback KJ Jefferson only attempted 17 passes throughout the entire game.
No. 1 Georgia traveled to Auburn, looking to prove the nation of its No. 1 ranked status. Auburn, backed by its orange-out crowd, was able to stick around with the top-ranked team in the country throughout the entire game. However, Georgia prevailed 27-20.
Auburn had control for most of the game until quarterback Carson Beck found his top target, tight end Brock Bowers, for a 40-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 27-20 lead late in the 4th quarter.
Georgia would go on to win by that score as Bowers finished the day with eight catches for 157 yards and a touchdown, as he continues to show why he is one of the best TEs in the nation.
No. 23 Missouri took down Vanderbilt 38-21 to remain undefeated on the season.
Missouri quarterback Brady Cook continued his dominant start with 395 yards and four touchdowns. He still has yet to throw an interception through the first five weeks of the season.
The Tigers star wide receiver Luther Burden III had 140 yards and two touchdowns as Vanderbilt could not stop the duo.
No. 13 LSU vs. No. 20 Ole Miss was the most exciting game of the SEC season so far. The Rebels used a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat LSU 55-49.
The quarterbacks showed off in this game. Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 414 yards and four touchdowns.
With a little over five minutes left, Ole Miss used an 11-play touchdown drive to bring the score to within two.
The crowd in Oxford, Mississippi got back into the game and helped the Rebels defense stop the Tigers on their next drive.
Jaxson Dart and the offense got in the two-minute drill and went down the field in eight plays to take the lead and ultimately win the game.
The Ole Miss crowd rushed the field after Daniels’ pass was broken up in the endzone.
No. 21 Tennessee defeated South Carolina 41-20 in a nighttime game at Neyland Stadium.
The Volunteers used a full team effort to defeat the Gamecocks. Three different running backs had a touchdown including Jaylen Wright, the leading rusher in the game with 123 yards.
Tennessee defensive back Kamal Hadden picked off Spencer Rattler and returned it for a touchdown to get the defense involved in the scoring, as well.
No. 11 Alabama went on the road and took down Mississippi State 40-17.
The Crimson Tide rode the legs of three runners. Quarterback Jalen Milroe led the team with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. Running backs Jase McClellan, 63 yards and a touchdown, and Roydell Williams, 44 yards rushing, both had over 10 carries, as well.
The SEC features two ranked matchups in Week 6. LSU and Missouri face off in Missouri, while Kentucky heads to Athens, Georgia to take on the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
