Around the NHL: Nov. 9

By Anthony Desher

We’re only a few weeks into the NHL season, but there has been so much going on all throughout the league. With all the action on the ice getting crazier by the day, let’s take a look at the latest updates from around the league.

Freddie Andersen out with blood clots, Jaroslav Halák gets PTO

It was announced Monday that Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen will be out indefinitely with blood clotting. Andersen is in the first year of his two-year extension and posted a 4-1 record with a .894 save percentage and a 2.87 goals-against average before the injury.

The Hurricanes also signed goaltender Jaroslav Halák to a professional tryout. He will most likely be a part of a tandem with Antti Raanta.

Jordan Eberle suffers skate cut, Shane Wright called up

The Seattle Kraken announced Wednesday that Jordan Eberle was cut in the leg by a skate during practice. Eberle was taken to the hospital for an MRI to find out the severity of the injury.

As a result, the Kraken announced that they called up top prospect Shane Wright. The forward registered two points in eight games with Seattle last season and has six points in several games this year with Coachella Valley.

Charlie McAvoy’s suspension upheld

Charlie McAvoy’s four-game suspension will stay after NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld the decision. The suspension was brought from an illegal hit to the head on Oliver Ekman-Larsson back on Oct. 30.

Edmonton Oilers make goaltender moves

On Tuesday, it was announced that the Oilers put goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers. He would clear waivers and be assigned to the Bakersfield Condors. Edmonton would later call up goaltender Calvin Pickard from the AHL.

Calgary Flames add Wolf to the pack

The Flames announced that they’ve called up goaltender Dustin Wolf from their AHL affiliate, Calgary Wranglers. Wolf has played extremely well over the past two seasons for the Wranglers, putting up a 42-10-2 record in last year’s campaign with a 2.09 GAA, .932 save percentage and seven shutouts.

He’s carried over that dominance to this season accumulating a .924 save percentage, 2.34 GAA and a shutout.

San Jose Sharks get elusive first win, make trade with Minnesota Wild

With a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, the Sharks recorded their first victory of the 2023-24 season. With a 1-10-1 record, San Jose avoids becoming the first team to lose 12 consecutive games to begin a season.

On Wednesday, the Sharks would receive defenseman Calen Addison from the Wild in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and Adam Raska. Minnesota would then go on a trade for defenseman Zach Bogosian from Tampa Bay for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
