Around the NHL: March 3
Less than a week to go before the trade deadline and there’s been a lot of circulation in the NHL news cycle. We’ve seen some movement, a few milestones and some big extensions, so let’s take a look at the biggest headlines from the past several days.
Chris Tanev traded to Dallas
Defenseman Chris Tanev was acquired by the Dallas Stars in a three-team trade between them, the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils.
Going back to Calgary in return for Tanev, the Flames would get defensive prospect Artem Grushnikov, the Stars’ second-round pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2026.
New Jersey received the Stars’ 2026 fourth-round pick for retaining 50% of Tanev’s contract. Tanev, 34, is in the last year of his four-year contract and makes $4.5 million annually.
The defenseman has 14 points on the season with one goal and 13 assists.
Sam Reinhart, Zach Hyman reach 40 goals
Some new players will be making their debut in the 40-goal club as Sam Reinhart and Zach Hyman reached the plateau over the past week.
Reinhart would score twice against the Montreal Canadiens Thursday night to reach the number as Zach Hyman reached 40 Wednesday night against the St. Louis Blues.
Reinhart currently has 42 goals on the season, which is second in the entire NHL. Adding 30 assists to his stat line, he’s up to 72 points on the year.
Hyman’s 40 goals make up a large portion of the 59 points he’s racked up throughout the season.
Sam Reinhart is a pending unrestricted free agent. This milestone is a big factor in his search for a big payday.
Nathan MacKinnon hits 100 points
One of the best in the game reaches 100 points yet again as Nathan MacKinnon continues his great career with another superb season.
On Thursday night MacKinnon tallied two points to help himself reach triple digits. A few days later, he’s up to 101 points with 37 goals and 64 assists on the year.
