As we near the all-star break, the NHL news cycle is constantly cycling. With so much going on in recent days, what are some headlines to look at?

Islanders fire Lane Lambert, hire Patrick Roy

The New York Islanders announced Saturday afternoon that they are parting ways with head coach Lane Lambert after a 19-15-11 stretch. To fill the vacancy, the Islanders hired legendary goaltender Patrick Roy to take over for the rest of the season.

Roy was most recently the coach of the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, going 53-12-3 last season and winning the championship.

Yes, Lou Lamoriello made Roy shave before his first practice with the club.

Oilers’ win streak reaches 13

The once-struggling Edmonton Oilers are struggling no more after tallying their 13th straight win in a row. The streak reached 13 with a 3-1 victory over their well-known rivals, the Calgary Flames.

Edmonton will have the chance to extend the streak further with its upcoming matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

All-Star captains revealed

The 2024 NHL All-Star captains have been revealed for the renewed all-star draft. Alongside players, some famous names will also be making an appearance as well.

Auston Matthews will be the captain of his own team with Morgan Reilly as his assistant. Justin Bieber will be joining Matthews and Reilly for the festivities. Connor McDavid will lead his team with Leon Draisaitl and Will Arnett.

Nathan MacKinnon will be with Cale Makar and Tate McRae, while Quinn and Jack Hughes will be co-captains with Michael Bublé as their celebrity captain.

Shane Pinto nearing reinstatement, signs extension with Senators

After being handed a 41-game suspension for gambling, Shane Pinto inked a one-year $775,000 dollar deal in anticipation of his return. Pinto is set to make his season debut on Sunday, Jan. 21 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Pinto collected 20 goals and 35 points in 82 games with the Senators last season.

Marc-Andre Fleury reaches milestone

With a 6-0 win over the Islanders earlier in the week, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has moved to second place on the NHL’s all-time wins list. With his 552nd career win, Fleury passed Patrick Roy (551) and now only sits behind Martin Brodeur (691) for most ever.

Anaheim’s Alex Killorn to miss 4-6 weeks

The Anaheim Ducks announced Saturday that forward Alex Killorn will be out for 4-6 weeks due to arthroscopic knee surgery. Killorn has six goals and 19 points in 34 games this season.

Logan Couture returns

After battling Osteitis pubis, a groin, abdomen and hip issue, San Jose Shark Logan Couture made his season debut Saturday against the Ducks. Couture was welcomed back with an assist and 15:49 minutes of ice time.
