Though the weather forecast may not indicate it, each day is one day closer to spring, which is the best time for golfing. However, golf is happening across the nation and the world. Let’s take a look at some storylines and news from around the links this week
PGA Tour
The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines concluded on Sunday, with the Swede Ludvig Åberg taking home the hardware. Åberg shot a six-under 66 on the final day to claim the victory. He had to contend with a surging Maverick McNealy, who battled back from a three-over performance in round one to shoot an eight-under 64 in the final round and place second.
Scottie Scheffler took a share of third place in his third tournament since a hand injury that sidelined him from December until late January. The world number one carded a six-under in the final round to rise into the top three.
Keegan Bradley, while only finishing at even par for the tournament, provided a viral moment by sinking an ace on the third hole in his final round. Bradley hit it from 155 yards out and put enough backspin on it to roll back into the cup. That would be his third career ace on tour and the seventh for the PGA Tour as a whole this season.
TGL
In the TGL, the New York Golf Club took on the Jupiter Links Golf Club. With both squads fighting to try and gain a spot in the SoFi Cup playoffs.
In the triples section, New York accumulated an 8-2 lead, including a hammer throw on hole three to earn double points for the hole. Jupiter would earn their two points on the final hole using their hammer to earn the bonus point.
In the singles section, Tiger Woods would secure a point on hole 10, shooting a birdie to defeat Cameron Young, who missed his birdie putt. Jupiter would split two and lose two of the final four holes, with Young and Rickie Fowler picking up the victories for New York.
With the win, New York moves into the final spot in the SoFi Cup playoffs. The loss for Jupiter drops them into fifth, just missing the playoff cut with only two matches left.
LIV Tour
Across the Pacific, the LIV Tour took on The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.
Joaquin Niemann finished as the low scorer for all players, shooting 13-under for the entire tournament. Niemann bounced back from a second round where he shot only one-under to shoot a seven-under in the final round and win the tournament. He was followed closely behind by Carlos Ortiz and Abraham Ancer who both tallied scores of 10-under for the tournament.
Niemann and Torque Golf Club didn’t win the team title, however. Ancer led the Fireballs Golf Club captained by Sergio Garcia to victory. Fireballs shot a combined 21-under while Torque only managed a collective 13-under for third place. Legion, captained by Jon Rahm, took second, shooting 15-under as a unit.
Other News
The Merger of The LIV Golf Tour and The PGA Tour took another step forward this week. Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, alongside PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, met with U.S. President Donald Trump and Saudi Official Yasir Al-Rumayyan at the White House.
This meeting is set to expand upon the original agreement set in 2023 to unify the tours and bring all of the players into one tour backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund.
No information is available about what exactly will be discussed, but no official deal could be ratified without the approval of the PGA Board.
