Around the Group of 7: Playoff contenders

By Andrew Deal

The Group of 7 is guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff. However, the likelihood of multiple teams getting in is highly unlikely.

Through four weeks of the season, some contenders for that spot have started to show. Here’s a team from each of the non-power 4 conferences that has a realistic chance of making the College Football Playoff.

American: Memphis Tigers

Entering the season, the Tigers had a non-conference game that would signify if this team had a chance. However, with Florida State completely falling from the rankings and yet to have a win, the victory over the Seminoles doesn’t look as impressive.

Memphis is sitting at 3-0 and essentially just has to win the American Athletic Championship to put themselves in position for the spot.

The Tigers are the top vote-getter among non-ranked teams to be ranked, signifying that another win likely means the team is ranked heading into week 5.

An undefeated Memphis, at the end of the season, would almost guarantee that the Tigers are ranked and in the top spot for that final position in the playoff.

Conference USA: Liberty Flames

Liberty was one of the top non-power 5 teams a season ago. The Flames played No. 8 Oregon in their bowl game, as well, which shows that the Playoff Committee already has some respect and familiarity with this team.

This team could be intriguing in the playoffs because it has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Kaidon Salter. Salter has led his team to an undefeated start and put the Flames in a position to be the highest-ranked conference champion among non-power 4 schools.

The Flames have also received votes to become ranked, but they have only received 10 votes compared to Memphis’ 77 in last week’s rankings.

MAC: No. 23 Northern Illinois Huskies

Who wouldn’t want some MACtion in the College Football Playoff?

The Huskies' victory over Notre Dame has the team ranked and currently the top non-power 4 school in the country.

Northern Illinois is currently 2-0 and still riding high after its upset of then-No. 5 Notre Dame. If the season ended today NIU would be No. 12 in the College Football Playoff.

The team has shown it can beat a top school like Notre Dame and with consistent victories the rest of the season, the Huskies will be in the playoffs.

Mountain West: Boise State Broncos

This is the team that makes the most sense to be able to compete against some of the best schools in the country.

The Broncos were a couple of plays away from knocking off Oregon. With a running back like Ashton Jeanty, this team can compete with any team in the country.

Despite already having a loss, it’s a quality loss to Oregon and the team just needs to keep winning to be able to sneak into the playoffs. If Boise State gets in, the team will pose a real threat to a top-10 team.

Sun Belt: South Alabama Jaguars

The Sun Belt is completely up for grabs and the Jaguars have been terrorizing defenses.

They have already played in Week 4 and dismantled Appalachian State as an underdog.

If the team continues its offensive hot streak, South Alabama could dominate its way to a College Football Playoff spot.
