Around ACC baseball: April 25
Every year the ACC is one of the best conferences in all of college baseball, and this season is no different.
Although the SEC has been an almighty power this year, do not overlook the talent of some of the teams in the ACC.
Here is a look at the top five teams in the conference as of April 25th.
1. Clemson Tigers 32-8 (13-5)
The first-place team in the ACC is a bit of a surprise considering how well Wake Forest played last season.
The Tigers have slid in nicely to the top spot however, as they are currently second as a team in ERA in the conference with a 3.91 overall ERA.
Clemson has 12 total pitchers that have earned at least one victory on the season.
In terms of hitting, the Tigers' leading hitter, infielder Blake Wright, has 16 home runs and 52 RBIs on the season.
2. North Carolina Tar Heels 31-10 (15-6)
The leaders in the Coastal Division clubhouse are looking to capture an ACC title this year. They and Clemson are neck and neck right now.
The Tar Heels offense has exploded this season, with seven of the team's starters having a batting average over .300 so far this season.
Star pitcher Matthew Matthijis has been huge for Carolina as well with an 11-3 record and a 3.29 ERA on the season.
If the hitting can continue to show out, then the Tar Heels are not a team that anyone would want to face in Omaha this summer.
3. Duke Blue Devils 29-12 (13-8)
Ben Miller is having a historic hitting season for the Blue Devils hitting an insane .444 with only a few weeks left in the season.
Now in his 12th season at the helm for Duke, former pitcher Chris Pollard is hoping that this season his Blue Devils can finally break through.
The depth at pitcher is also there with eight different pitchers accumulating two or more wins on the season up to this point.
Don’t count out Duke down the stretch.
4. Florida State Seminoles 32-8 (11-7)
Non-conference wise this was one of the best teams in the country with only one loss heading into ACC play.
The Seminoles have struggled away from Tallahassee, with an overall 5-6 road record on the season.
Do not let that distract you from the fact that James Tibbs III has been having an insane season with 17 home runs, 64 RBI and a batting average of just over .400 at .401.
Florida State has a big test in Durham this weekend as they take on Duke.
5. Virginia Cavaliers 31-11 (12-9)
Let it be known that this could arguably be one of the best-hitting lineups in all of college baseball, and the stats back it up.
All nine of the Cavs starters are hitting over .270, and seven of the nine are hitting over .300 on the season. Their pitching has not been great, but it has not mattered much this season.
Virginia may be a huge threat this postseason if the hitting continues the way it has been this entire season.
Watch out for Virginia down the stretch.
HM: NC State WolfPack 22-16 (12-9)
In their last two ACC series, the Pack won the series against the top-ranked ACC teams Clemson and North Carolina.
Once again NC State is another team that could go on a sneaky run to the ACC title game, similar to what the basketball team was able to do a little over a month ago.
This team is heavily underrated as the ACC baseball season wraps up in the coming weeks.
