
After The Whistle District 6 & Penn State Sports Weekly Recap: March 5, 2025
After the Whistle covered various high school and Penn State sports this week.
Boys Basketball
Last Wednesday, Bishop Guilfoyle faced Forest Hills in the 3A championship. The Rangers dominated through most of the match, taking home the trophy by a 69-58 advantage.
State College faced McDowell high school in the Sub-Regional Championship. The game was balanced until the fourth quarter when the Trojans stepped up to win the match 56-43. With the win, McDowell advances on the championship run, facing Central Catholic next.
Girls Basketball
The reigning 1A state champions win it all again. Bishop Guilfolye took a 61-44 win against Bishop Carroll last Wednesday, to earn its fifth district championship in six years.
Bocce
During the Interscholastic Unified Indoor Bocce Championship, the golden medal was between Bald Eagle Area High School and Central Columbia. In the end, Bald Eagle earned the highest achievement of the night by a 7-4 lead.

Wrestling (Southwest AA Regionals)
107 weight class: Bishop McCort’s Keegan Bassett took down Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria, winning it 10-2.
121 weight class: Bald Eagle Area’s Tanner Guenot earned the win against Chestnut Ridge’s Dominic Deputy.
145 weight class: Bishop McCort’s Bo Bassett took the win against Elizabeth Forward’s Lucas Boyer, winning with two takedowns in ten seconds.
160 weight class: Lastly, Bishop McCort’s Melvin Miller pinned Bentworth Bearcats’ Owen Ivcic in 90-seconds to take the win. Meanwhile, Crimson Crusher Jayden O’Farrill won 8-6 against Burrell Buccaneer Isaac Lacinski.
Wrestling (West AAA Regionals)
114 weight class: Hempfield Area’ Nico Kapusta won his first ever high school regional match against Dubois’ Mateo Gallegos. Kapusta remains undefeated this season and will head to the state championship.
127 weight class: Butler’s Santino Sloboda won on a sweep against Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner, 10-0.
133 weight class: In a rematch of the District 7 championship, Indiana’s Nico Fanella tallied six points against Greater Latrobe’s Luke Willochell to conquer his first ever regional title.
145 weight class: Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry put an end to Baldwin Highlanders’ Ramil Islamov undefeated season, winning it by a close margin of 7-6.
160 weight class: Altoona’s Lucas Sipes won 8-1 against Cornellsville’s Lonzy Vielma. Sipes moves on to the finals on what could be his first state title in his career.
172 weight class: Asher Cunningham dominated the match against Thomas Jefferson’s Bode Marlow. The Penn State commit did not allow his opponent to tally a single point, winning it 18-0.

Penn State Hockey
The men’s hockey team won their first game of the series against Minnesota with a goal from captain Simon Mack in overtime. However, the Nittany Lions dropped their second matchup, losing 5-3. Penn State will face No. 11 Michigan on the road in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
The women’s hockey team swept RIT 3-2 and 4-0, respectively, with Tessa Janacke and netminder Kate Desa’s performances standing out amongst the team. With the win in the best-of-three series, Penn State will face Mercyhurst to try to earn their third-consecutive AHA championship at Pegula Ice Arena.
Penn State Basketball
The women’s basketball team finished their season in a matchup against Purdue. The Lady Lions kept a good pace in the beginning of the game, but ultimately fell 92-85. Penn State fell short of the Big Ten Tournament.
Penn State Baseball
In its home opener, Penn State faced FDU on Medlar Field. On a Tuesday Dollar Dog Night, the Nittany Lions secured a 7-6 win.
