“Abbott Elementary” Halloween episode, “Costume Contest,” aired on October 30, 2024, and it was another entertaining addition to season 4.

The episode begins with Janine and Gregory showing off their couple’s costume, which is from the classic film “Jurassic Park.” They dress up as Mr. DNA and the mosquito trapped in amber.

Although it is a clever choice that would effectively serve as a fun tribute to a movie they both love, everyone else fails to understand the reference, leading to some really funny moments.

Ava's usual humor came through when she said she recognized the costume right away but did not think it was good. Another funny moment involved the janitor, Mr. Johnson, played by William Stanford Davis, dressed as emo Jimmy Butler.

Ava dressed as Grace Jones, which was not surprising. Jacob dressed as the guy from "Wheel of Fortune."

The funny side of Abbott Elementary relies on the cast's unique chemistry, and this episode did not disappoint.

The teachers make fun of Janine and Gregory’s costumes, calling them a “headass” a term usually used amongst younger generations that adds comedic relief since most of the staff is older. This roasting session shows how close the teachers are and how Janine and Greogry are starting to fit in as a couple at school.

Despite the negative feedback on their costumes, Janine and Gregory realize the opinions of others don’t matter as much as their bond with each other. Their compatibility is clear to see in both serious and fun situations. This episode showcases the strength of their relationship and how well they work together.

The natural progression of their relationship is relatable and gives fans hope that, even if things get rocky, they'll find their way back to each other.

The school holds a costume contest where all the teachers participate. The winner is Melissa, who dressed up with her class pet Sweet Cheeks as each other.

Abbott Elementary continues to delight fans with its creative writing and engaging character dynamics.

With Janine and Gregory's relationship continuing to grow and evolve, the show beautifully illustrates their relationship, being on the same page and embracing the quirks that make them perfect for each other.

Interestingly, the idea that happy couples are seen as boring helps develop Janine and Gregory's characters. In the early seasons, the spark between Janine and Gregory was the main reason viewers became emotionally attached to them, despite their ups and downs.

The episode wraps up with the staff heading to a bar and getting drunk, except for Barbra, who leaves early. Janie and Gregory end their night together rewatching "Jurassic Park."

This episode is one of the best of the season so far because it challenges the usual themes of Halloween episodes. Instead of trying to be spooky or scary, it focused on its strength of comedy.

“Abbott Elementary” continues to keep fans entertained and excited for more laughs and wholehearted moments throughout the season.

Episode 5 airs on Nov. 6, 2024, with new episodes premiering every Wednesday.

Rating: 10/10
