Beanpot

2025 men's Beanpot preview

By Andrew Matz

Boston has always been a hotbed for hockey. The Boston Bruins are one of the original six teams and it has thrived in and around the city.

Nowhere is this more evident than in college hockey.

Starting next week is the annual Beanpot tournament. This is where the four major Boston schools all face off against one another.

The four schools in the tournament include the Boston College Eagles, Boston University Terriers, Northeastern Huskies and Harvard Crimson.

The tournament is always a great watch as we get to see some of the best teams in college hockey clash.

This year is the 72nd edition of the Beanpot which started in 1952.

As of late Northeastern has been dominant in the tournament winning the last two and also winning five out of the last six.

Northeastern will never forget their win in the tournament last year as Gunnarwolfe Fontaine won it for the Huskies in overtime.

Boston College and Boston University both looked poised to be great. Both teams are led by a ton of star power.

For the Eagles, their first line consists of James Hagens, Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard. The Eagles are 16-4-1 and are the No. 1 ranked team in the country going into the weekend.

Alongside the first line, Boston College has one of the best goalies in college hockey. Jacob Fowler. He has been lights-out for the Eagles with a 15-3-1 record and five shutouts.

The Terriers have also been great this season. They have a 13-7-1 record on the season, which is good enough to have them ranked at No. 8.

They have great talent on their team which includes Quinn Hutson, Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson.

Goaltending has not been great this season for Boston University but it has been good enough for them to take games.

Last year's champion Northeastern has struggled this season. They have a 9-10-3 record and are unranked.

The departure of Gunnarwolfe Fontaine has been hard for the Huskies but they have seen great play from players such as Jack Williams, Cam Lund and Dylan Hryckowian.

While the wins might not be there, they have gotten solid goaltending from Cameron Whitehead.

The final team in the tournament is Havard. They might not be known as the biggest hockey school but they have had success in the Beanpot.

The Crimson have struggled mightily this season with a 6-9-2 record

Their top players include Joe Miller, Casey Severo and Mick Thompson.

They will have a decision to make for who to start between Aku Koskenvuo and Ben Charette.

If I were to pick a team to win my choice would be the Boston College Eagles. They have so much talent on that team and great goaltending.

Boston University also looks good and will have an amazing chance to win.

Northeastern and Harvard both have a chance to win, but they don’t look as good as the other two teams.

With that said Northeastern has had the most success over the past couple of years.

The Beanpot is always a great tournament to watch, and it features some of the most hard-fought games in the college hockey season.

The games kick off on Feb. 3 from TD Garden starting with Boston University playing Harvard at 5 p.m. and Northeastern playing Boston College at 8 p.m.

The tournament will conclude on Monday, Feb. 10 with the losers playing in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. and the winners playing for the championship at 7:30 p.m.
