Penn State's Tessa Janecke trying to win a faceoff against Syracuse

2023-2024 Penn State women's hockey report card: vs. Syracuse Game Two

By Matt Becker

After a bad loss on Friday night to Syracuse, Penn State bounced back with a huge win to stay in first place in the CHA.

Here’s how game two looked on a report card format.

Offense: A-

After an embarrassing one-goal performance the night before, Penn State had an offensive surge in Game Two.

The scoring started in the second period when Lyndie Lobdell scored a goal from just above the center ice line. Then, former LIU Shark Alva Johnsson scored off a great pass in front from Brianna Brooks.

The scoring did not stop there as Tessa Janecke, Mya Vaslet and Kendall Butze all scored to ultimately push the Nittany Lions to a 5-0 win. Penn State put up 53 shots on goal.

Defense A+

Most of the time, getting a shutout is mostly due to goaltending but this one was because of the defense. It seemed like every attack by Syracuse was immediately shut down by the Penn State defense.

The defense had seven blocked shots and shut down multiple forechecks from Syracuse.

Penn State barely had any turnovers which led them to keep sustained pressure on Syracuse.

Goaltending A-

Due to the sudden injury of Penn State's all-time wins leader Josie Bothun, second-string goalie Katie DeSa stepped up and pitched her first career shutout.

Desa made all 12 saves and stepped up when the team needed it most.

Coaching/Special Teams C+

After going 1-7 the night before on the powerplay, things were not much better in Game Two.

Penn State went 2-6 in Game Two on the power play along with a great penalty kill.

Despite shooting more on the powerplay, it still did not click as well as it should have.

Penn State had one penalty kill in game two but it looked a lot better than Game One.
