“mangetout” - wet leg
Wet Leg is one of my all-time favorite bands, and “mangetout” is such a classic in their catalog. It’s one of those tracks that perfectly captures what makes them so fun.
It’s also been getting more attention lately with its feature in “Heated Rivalry,” which makes total sense because the song is insanely catchy and sharp.
The title alone is such smart wordplay. “mangetout” is another name for a snap pea, which plays directly into the lyric: “Here, take this packet, you read it, it says, ‘Mangetout’ / I gave you magic beans, I hope you’re gonna get out soon.”
At the same time, it reads as “man, get out,” which ties perfectly into the song’s theme of dismissal and no toleration of nonsense. And then on top of that, it’s also French for “eat all,” which just adds another interesting layer. It’s clever without feeling try-hard, which is very Wet Leg.
Sonically, the track leans into this 90s-inspired, grungy and slightly sleazy energy. The guitar licks are punchy and a little jagged, giving the song that off-kilter coolness that makes it feel effortless.
Rhian Teasdale’s vocals really carry that energy. There’s this snarky, almost deadpan delivery from her that alludes confidence and makes you want to carry yourself with that same level of not caring what anyone else thinks.
Overall, “mangetout” is just one of those songs that feels cool without trying too hard and has been on repeat for me. -Madison Rush
