WCBB: Big Ten vs. SEC

Two conferences in women's college basketball flood the rankings as we inch closer to March.

The Big Ten and the SEC display immense talent, with both conferences featuring 17 of the teams in the top 25.

In fact, the SEC broke a record for the most teams from a single conference ranked in the top 25.

The Big Ten leads the nation in NET strength of schedule, with many dangerous squads worth noting.

Let’s take a deep dive into each conference and how things will play out heading towards mid-February.

Big Ten

The Big Ten is star-studded, with each squad representing the top 25 in a big way.

The UCLA Bruins are the first team to note, ranking No. 2 in the country with just one loss on the season. They’ve won 14 straight with no signs of slowing down.

They’re 14-0 in conference play, dominating the Big Ten while keeping pace from a national standpoint.

Right behind them is Michigan, which played the Bruins back on Feb. 8. It was a close battle, but ultimately fell to them by three points.

While that loss hindered their ranking, the Wolverines have rattled off 10 of their last 13. They are still a top ten squad with a lot to prove in March.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are another team to watch out for, as they’ve been climbing the ranks as the season has gone on.

They sit just under Michigan in the national poll, ranking No. 8 with a 22-3 overall record.

Success continues to be the name of the game at Ohio State, as they push towards competing in a very difficult conference.

Other notable teams in the Big Ten are Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan State.

Iowa and Michigan State are outside the top ten but still remain ranked. Minnesota has been receiving votes but is still keeping pace in a stacked division.

There’s no doubt about the talent level in this conference; we’ll just have to see how it will all play out in March. With the SEC foes posing a difficult task, it’ll be interesting to see who ends up coming out on top.

SEC

Just like the Big Ten, the SEC has an immense amount of star power. There’s going to be a lot of dangerous teams in this tournament, and the SEC features just about all of them.

First off, the South Carolina Gamecocks, who sit at No. 3 in the country, just under UCLA and No. 1 UConn.

They’ve dominated pretty much everyone they’ve faced this year. Only two losses on the year, they’ve taken down pretty much every contender.

Their two losses were both close ones. One being a 66-64 loss to then No. 4 Texas back in late November. They have gone on to win every game since losing to then-No. 16 Oklahoma in overtime.

Despite that, the team has played like one of the most dominant teams in the country. They show no signs of slowing down heading into March.

Vanderbilt is another team to watch out for, even though they lost an ugly one to South Carolina back in late January.

They stand as a top-five unit in 2026, ranking No. 5 while ranking second in the SEC.

Texas is another squad to keep an eye on, as they’re one of the best defensive teams in the country.

They rank second in the SEC by allowing only 53.7 points per game, an impressive feat in a conference full of high-volume offense.

The conference provides a lot of depth regarding talented teams. Schools like Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and LSU scatter the national polls in a big way.

With both of these conferences displaying legitimate star power, there’s no doubt women’s college basketball fans are in for a highly entertaining postseason tournament.
