Top 10 NBA teams headed towards the playoffs
10. Toronto Raptors
Sitting at the bottom spot on this list, the Toronto Raptors are currently sitting at the fifth seed in the East. This is largely thanks to a defense that has kept them competitive in nearly every matchup, along with some key offensive contributors like Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes.
Currently, the Raptors allow just 112.0 points per game and cause roughly 16 turnovers per game. While they currently lack an elite scorer and an extensive bench, their balanced rotation and strong road record give them a postseason profile built on consistency.
9. Cleveland Cavaliers
Despite currently sitting at the fourth seed in the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers have had a rough turnaround after an unfortunate start to the season. They have currently won seven of their last ten games and have one of the easiest schedules for the remainder of the season.
Led by their young core, this team can play both on and off the ball, with an offense averaging 119.1 points per game and a defense that can shut down offensive juggernauts. The Cavaliers’ ability to generate efficient half-court looks and defend without fouling has made them one of the conference’s most stable teams.
8. New York Knicks
Jumping a spot, the New York Knicks continue to build on last season’s momentum, ranking among the league’s most physical defensive teams. When this is paired with some of the most prominent young talent in the NBA, in guys like Jalen Brunson and one of the deepest rotations in the League, it is clear why teams should be afraid of them.
The team has also remained extremely consistent in late-game situations, toughing out a few surprising upsets.
7. Houston Rockets
Houston has emerged as one of the West’s biggest surprises, climbing into the third seed in the West despite some amazing competition. Led by a mix of both young stars and aging legends, with a fast-paced offense and improved defensive structure, they are a clear threat in the West.
Their 38-22 record reflects a team that has found its identity, and their young core has delivered throughout all the tough moments.
6. Boston Celtics
Despite the loss of their star player, Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics remain as one of the league’s most complete teams, ranking near the top in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Despite the team now being led by Jalen Brown, it is impossible to give him all the credit for this team’s success. Guys like Derrick White and Payton Pritchard have consistently shown up throughout the season, no matter what challenges they may have faced.
And now, just 10 months after his Achilles injury, we are hearing rumors that Tatum could be back as soon as a week. Therefore, if they can gain a healthy, fully recovered Tatum alongside the team they have already accomplished so much with, the Celtics could cause some big problems in the East.
5. Denver Nuggets
Now cracking the top five, the Denver Nuggets' consistency and ability to escape from deficits keep them firmly in this position. With Nikola Jokić leading the league in rebounds (12.6) and assists (10.3), the Nuggets continue to rely on elite playmaking and efficient scoring. Their current 38-24 record, along with a recent winning streak against tough competition, shows they remain a threat to any contender.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves
Led by Anthony Edwards, one of the NBA’s most exciting and skilled young players, the Minnesota Timberwolves physicality and interior defense have kept them among the West’s elite. Their current 39-23 record includes a 5-game winning streak against teams like the Denver Nuggets, showing they can consistently take down strong opponents.
The Timberwolves’ ability to protect the rim and dominate the boards has also made them one of the league’s toughest defensive units. This is also coming from a team that has significant playoff experience despite having such a young core, making them a threat not only now but for many years to come.
3. Detroit Pistons
Another of the biggest surprises this season has been the Detroit Pistons' boom. Coming off a 44-38 record last year, the Pistons have already surpassed that win total and have the second-best record in the league at 45-15. Their offense averages 117.2 points per game, and their offensive and defensive playmaking gives them one of the league’s strongest full rosters in the NBA.
Detroit’s blend of efficient scoring, led by current MVP candidate Cade Cunningham, its disciplined defense and late-game execution has made it a legitimate title contender.
2. San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as one of the biggest challengers in the league this season, as evidenced by their stellar 44-17 record. Many of these wins come from an extremely talented young roster, which currently revolves around a core of players all under the age of 22.
Their defensive ability is also among the strongest, largely due to Victor Wembanyama, who is the current leader in blocks per game and ranks fifth in rebounds per game. Recently, they have also won eight of their last 10 games, and they hope to enter the postseason with momentum and confidence.
1. Oklahoma City Thunder
Unsurprisingly, the Oklahoma City currently sits at the top of this list as the league’s top overall team. Their 49-15 record and .766 winning percentage lead the NBA, despite having one of the toughest schedules this season.
While they may have cooled down a little since their historic beginning to the season, MVP Candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to play at an MVP level. At the same time, the Thunder’s depth and defensive versatility have made them dominant on both ends. With elite late-game execution and one of the league’s best home-court advantages, Oklahoma City stands as the championship favorite.
