Penn State softball invitational cancelled

By Jack Dobbins

University Park, Pa. – Penn State has canceled its softball invitational scheduled for March 5-8 due to anticipated weather concerns.

The 12-game event was set to begin March 5, with Penn State scheduled to play five games. The Nittany Lions were slated to face Lehigh University on March 5 and Binghamton University on March 6. Matchups with Colgate University on March 7 and a March 8 doubleheader against Colgate and Niagara University were also scheduled.

Penn State is now set to compete in the Hokie Invite hosted by Virginia Tech in Salem, Virginia. The Nittany Lions will play four games after posting a 3-2 record in the event last season. This year’s opponents include Radford University, Boston College, James Madison University and Virginia Tech.

With the cancellation, Penn State’s 53-game schedule is reduced to 52 games, and its home slate drops from 19 to 14 contests.

The cancellation also postpones Penn State’s home opener. The Nittany Lions are now scheduled to host the University of Wisconsin on Friday, March 20.
