College baseball opening weekend recap

By Bryan Portney

The opening weekend of the Division I college baseball season has come and gone, to the tune of many exciting moments.

The top team in the land went down in a one-off loss, plus there were back-to-back extra-inning thrillers in a mid-major series.

The Big Ten put itself on the map after a huge top-10 series upset, while other teams in the conference took care of business all across the country.

From football scores to games reminiscent of Omaha, this weekend had it all. Read below for the recap of all of that and more.

No. 10 TCU defeats No. 7 Arkansas, 5-4

The Shriners Children’s College Showdown had many electric games, but seemingly none of them had more flash than this one.

The primetime Saturday night showdown did not disappoint as the Horned Frogs hopped to a 4-0 lead after two frames. They answered a Razorback run with one of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

Arkansas put two runs back on the board in the top of the fifth with a passed ball and an RBI double, putting them within two of TCU.

TCU right-handed pitcher Zack James was credited with the win while pitching during this stretch, recording a clutch strikeout to end the Razorbacks’ three-run inning.

The Razorbacks were within one after a seventh-inning solo home run. However, it would not be enough as the final score stood at 5 to 4.

The pitching staffs combined for 24 strikeouts to just 11 walks, with TCU southpaw Mason Brassfield leading the pack with six batters set down.

Last year, Pearl River defeated John A. Logan 4 to 2, with Wildcat shortstop Jaxon Milam going 3-for-4 with a run batted in.

Michigan State shocks No. 8 Louisville

The Spartans helped put eyes on the Big Ten last weekend after taking the first two of a three-game set at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The opener was a shocker of its own as Michigan State skidded by Louisville by a score of 4 to 3, stopping a potential ninth-inning surge with a runner in scoring position.

Spartan right-hander Tommy Szczepanski held down the fort for the final four outs, three of them being in order after letting up a single and overseeing a stolen base.

The following act could not have been better for Sparty, taking the Saturday clash by a convincing 13 to 4 score.

Michigan State had crooked numbers three times, highlighted by the deciding fourth inning with six players crossing the plate for them.

Louisville would go on to win the series finale 9 to 1, but the damage was well done by that point. The Cardinals ended up dropping seven spots to No. 15 in the latest D1Baseball poll.

North Dakota State at FGCU: A tale of two games

Sometimes, the best product of college baseball is found within the confines of the Summit League and the ASUN.

This weekend proved just that as FGCU swept North Dakota State, but the headliner was the first two of a three-game set when they duked it out for back-to-back extra-inning thrillers.

In the Friday opener, FGCU won 2 to 1 in 10 innings thanks to a Javier Gorostola RBI single to walk it off.

The following day, the Eagles stormed out to a 12-8 lead after the first four innings of play, followed by a Bison nine-run surge in the eighth to help propel the game to extras.

Cole Lasher proved to be the hero for the Eagles with a pinch-hit, walk-off RBI single. In total, 14 pitchers were used by the two sides.

La Salle turns heads in return to the diamond

For the first time since 2021, the Explorers played ball at Hank DeVincent Field as they took on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

La Salle did not waste any time getting back under their bearings, cruising through the Hawks with an opening 27 to 10 victory in eight innings.

The rest of the weekend went smoothly for the Explorers, securing another run-rule victory on Saturday and outscoring the Hawks 48-16 through the three-game stretch.
