Athletes who have won medals in Summer and Winter Olympics

By Austin Moran

The Olympics are the absolute pinnacle of the sports world every two years in the summer and winter.

We’ve seen many athletes experience the glory of representing their country and winning a medal in either the summer or the winter, but some have accomplished that feat in both.

The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan just ended, so here is a list of Olympians who have won medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Eddie Eagan (USA)

Eddie Eagan competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, where he won gold in boxing's light heavyweight division.

Eagan later competed at the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics and won another gold medal in the four-man bobsleigh competition.

Pretty impressive.

Christa Luding-Rothenburger (Germany)

At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, Luding-Rothenburger won gold in the 500-meter speed skating competition.

Four years later, at the 1988 Calgary winter games, she won another gold medal in the 1000-meter speed skating competition and a silver medal in the 500-meter.

That same year, she won silver in the track cycling sprint at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Lots of hardware for the German.

Clara Hughes (Canada)

Hughes is an Olympic legend with her experience and resume. Winning bronze in the road race and time trial road cycling at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics kicked off a storied career.

In Salt Lake City in 2002 at the Winter Games, Hughes took home another Olympic bronze in the 5000-meter speed skating competition.

She finally won gold in the 5000-meter speed skating competition and also brought home a silver in the team pursuit speed skating competition at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

In 2010, another bronze was won in the 5000-meter speed skating competition at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Hughes is the only athlete in history to win multiple medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Lauryn Williams (USA)

Williams won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens in the 100-meter dash.

A gold came in the 4x100-meter relay at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Then two years later at the Sochi winter games, Williams took home silver in the two-woman bobsleigh competition to become the first American woman to win medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Eddy Alvarez (USA)

Eddy Alvarez is the newest member to join this rare club. Alvarez won silver in the 5000-meter relay speed skating competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Then six years ago, it was another silver medal for Alvarez and Team USA in baseball at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.

It’s always a great two-week span when the Olympics are on, and maybe someone who hits the podium this year will join this elite list of athletes in the near future.
